Wang Shujin, a Chinese national who was arrested early this week for issuing bouncing cheques to UBC has been charged and released on bail. Shujin appeared this morning before Dawa Matenga, Buganda Grade I magistrate were he was charged with issuing false cheques.

Details of the case are that on May 27, 2011, Shujin through his company Sino East Africa Trade Development Limited issued 68 false cheques to UBC for the purchase of its land in Bugolobi. This morning, Shujin pleaded not guilty to the charges and applied for bail.

His lawyer Muzamir Kibedi told court that the offense against his client was bailable. He also told court that Shujin owns land worth 8 million dollars and was putting up an investment of about 27 million dollars at Bugolobi. Shijuni presented Richard Muwonge, Henry Kiwanuka and Jordan Muyomba Kato as sureties for the suspect.

In his ruling, Matenga granted Shujin cash bail of shillings 10 million and asked him to deposit his passport in court. He bonded each of the three sureties to shillings 500 million not in cash and ordered them to deposit their passports. Matenga said despite the fact that Shujin is a foreigner he is entitled to bail.
