Christians in Luwero Diocese have held a procession and special prayer service, calling for the consecration and enthronement of Rev. Canon Godfrey Kasana Ssemakula as the 4th Bishop of the Diocese. This follows the nullification of Kasana's election by the House of Bishops, citing allegations of misrepresented integrity during the nomination and election process.

Last week, Rev. Canon William Ongeng, the Provincial Secretary of the Church of Uganda issued a statement indicating that the House of Bishops sitting at Kabalega Resort Hotel in Hoima on June 28th, 2023 resolved to nullify the elections of Rev. Canon Kasana Ssemakula.

He explained that the extraordinary decision was taken after getting credible information indicating that the Bishop-elect’s integrity was misrepresented during the nomination and election process, which invalidated the election. However, a group of Christians have since rejected the decision.

On Friday, a significant gathering of believers convened at St. Mark Cathedral to dedicate Rev. Canon Kasana Ssemakula to God and offer prayers for his consecration. Reverend Samuel Sserwanja underscored the belief that Kasana was divinely chosen for the position and sought divine intervention to overcome the current challenges he faces.

Erastus Kibirango, the LC 5 Chairman of Luwero and Diocesan lawyer, addressed the congregation, stating that the House of Bishops had not provided a fair hearing for Kasana and that the allegations against him were malicious. Kibirango urged Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu to reconsider the decision and proceed with Kasana's consecration.

Reverend Canon Eric Ssebigajju, the Diocesan secretary, issued a statement informing the congregation that a new nomination process would be initiated to select candidates to replace Kasana. However, the congregation rejected the statement and prevented its reading during the service, expressing their dissatisfaction with the decision.

Following the prayers, the faithful participated in a peaceful procession, holding placards denouncing the Church's decision and demanding Kasana's consecration as Bishop. The participants pointed to internal conflicts and alleged jealousy within the church as underlying factors causing trouble for Kasana.

Stephen Mutebi, a Christian from Luteete Archdeacon asked the House of Bishops to revisit their diocese because the allegations of adultery against Kasana were not proven. Moses Kayongo, the Vice Chairperson of Lay Leaders described Kasana as a committed Christian, transparent, and development-oriented whom they don’t want to lose due to jealousy individuals.

Patricia Magara, another Christian asked Church to forgive Kasana in case he committed a sin because no one is perfect. Magara also questioned the haste decision to replace Kasana without following the normal procedure.

Despite the forthcoming retirement of the current Bishop of Luwero, Right Rev. Eridard Nsubuga, on July 9, 2023, Christians have expressed their intention to stage another protest in the presence of Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, urging him to proceed with Kasana's consecration.

Kasana's election was nullified after a petition by a group of Christians led by Kenneth R. Kikabi, who accused Kasana of violating the ten commandments and canon laws by allegedly fathering a child outside of wedlock.

The controversy surrounding Kasana's consecration continues to evoke strong emotions among the faithful, with differing opinions regarding the fairness of the decision and the importance of forgiveness and understanding.
