Construction of a rehabilitation
centre for Gender Based Violence -GBV victims in Kasese District has been
launched.
The project worth 360 million Shillings with funding from the United Nations Development Programme-UNDP was launched on Thursday. Construction works were awarded to Brooks Engineering Works Limited.
The objective of the
shelter is to provide a safe space for GBV survivors to access
comprehensive services including legal aid, psychosocial support, and
reintegration of survivors back into society. Construction works are expected to be completed in 3 months.
Justine Muhindo Mutabazi, the Kasese Assistant RDC in charge of Kasese Municipality said GBV is a global challenge that is triggered and
exacerbated by humanitarian crises causing tremendous suffering and threatening
peace and development.
She is optimistic that the centre will go a long way
to rehabilitate victims and educate the masses on the dangers of GBV and the actions
needed to curb the vice.

Rev. Betty
Mbambu Mweru, the Mothers’ Union Coordinator at South Rwenzori Diocese noted
that the rising suicidal cases in the district can be attributed to domestic violence
