The Kibuku Magistrates Court has remanded Ayub Magumba, an inmate on charges of burglary and theft involving four firearms belonging to the Uganda Prison Services-UPS. Magumba, a resident of Tirinyi Central A Cell in Tirinyiyi Town Council, Kibuku, appeared before Grade One Magistrate Abubaker Matanda and pleaded guilty to the charges.

According to court proceedings, Magumba, along with others whose identities have not yet been established, unlawfully entered the residency of Corporal Wadder Boniventure Okea at Kibuku Government Prison on the night of November 15th, 2023, with the intent to commit a felony. The prosecution revealed that Magumba stole four Sub Machine Guns, three with UPDF registration numbers and one marked with a Prison number, along with 106 ammunition, valued at Shillings 2.4 million, property of the Uganda Prisons Services.

Having pleaded guilty, Magumba was remanded to Budaka prisons until November 27th, 2023, for the Prosecution, led by Senior State Attorney Justine Chekwech, to present the facts of the case before the Court proceeds with the conviction. Records indicate that Corporal Okea Bonaventure oversaw the armory in his residence, from which the firearms were stolen.

Three of the rifles were reportedly recovered in the garden of Stellah Okia, Reverend Roben Okei's wife at Tirinyi III Cells. Magumba discarded one rifle at Tirinyi I Cell. Police reports also note Magumba's recent escape from Kibuku prison on November 13th, 2023, while facing other charges. Witnesses positively identified him while discarding a white polythene bag containing a rifle, wrapped in multicolored cloth with a yellow ZIP cloth string, along with a separate magazine holding 30 rounds of ammunition.

Additionally, a pair of gray sandals (size 45, made in Kenya, model X-Pander GK-6821) dropped during his escape was recovered. A search is ongoing to apprehend his accomplice, who remains at large. Court documents reveal this is Magumba's third appearance before the Kibuku Magistrates Court on burglary and theft-related charges. His initial appearance on July 6th, 2023, involved the theft of a laptop bag and Shillings 785,000, resulting in his subsequent acquittal on September 18th, 2023.

Another separate file on the same day saw Magumba denying theft charges initially but later changing his plea to guilty. The stolen items, a TV, a woofer, a flash drive, and cables, were subsequently recovered. Matanda sentenced him to 8 month’s imprisonment for each count, and his acquittal came while serving this sentence. However, Magumba escaped from prison, leading to his third appearance before Matanda on charges related to the theft of prison firearms after escaping on November 13th, 2023.
