Gimoyi Mugoya ,20, was shot dead on Friday while trying to escape from the facility
Prison Warders at Malukhu government Prison in Mbale have shot dead an inmate accused of trying to escape from lawful custody.

Gimoyi Mugoya ,20, was shot dead on Friday while trying to escape from the facility.

Mugoya was convicted last year after being found in possession of stolen property and Government Stores. He was serving a four year jail sentence.

The Uganda Prisons Spokesperson, Frank Baine, says the convict  was shot when he ignored warning shots while fleeing through the women’s wing.

“The prisoner jumped out from the prison from the women’s side. Warders tried shooting to stop him but he became smart and that is how he was hit in the left thigh” Baine said on phone.

He succumbed to the gunshot wounds before reaching the hospital.

John Robert Tukei, the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson told Uganda Radio network that a team of detectives from Homicide Squad and Scene of Crime Officers dashed to comb the scene, saying investigations are ongoing.

He said the deceased's body has been taken to Mbale municipal mortuary pending postmortem.

Police has opened inquiries at Mbale Central Police Station under CRB 270/2020.
