Fire has gutted a house in Kamuli district burning a couple beyond recognition. The incident occurred last night in Mulalu village, Kagumba Sub County.

The deceased have been identified as 29-year-old Yusuf Mugeele and Novia Namulondo aged 26 years.

The couples’ neighbours say Mugeele was involved in a heated argument with his ex-wife during the day.  Mugeele’s ex-wife whose names have been withheld to avoid jeopardizing investigations has been arrested and detained at Kamuli central police station.

It is alleged that Mugeele’s ex-wife connived with others still at large to torch her ex-husband and his girlfriend.

“Mugeele separated with his wife during last year’s lockdown and he settled with another lady early this year, which did not go on well with his first wife who kept on threatening him all the time”, one of the neighbours said.

Jeremiah Ssekandi, the Village Chairperson says that attempts to put out the fire were futile since the police fire and rescue services unit arrived late. He suspects that the couple’s house could have been set ablaze deliberately.

The acting Kamuli District Police Commander, Bob Mugisha says that, at the time of the incident, the house did not have power but, they retrieved a small jerrycan containing fuel, which raises their suspicion of arson.

Mugisha adds that they have intensified their inquiries aimed at hunting down all possible suspects.
