Lance Corporal, Geoffrey Odaga is to spend the next 40 years in prison for shooting dead three people and injuring another at Smiling Panda 2 Pub in Bar-dege division in Gulu town last week.

The General Court Martial Chairperson, Lt. Gen Andrew Gutti convicted Odaga on his own plea of guilt to all the five charges slapped against him by the state. He was charged with three accounts of murder, attempted murder and aggravated robbery.

Initially, the convict pleaded not guilty to the charges prompted prosecution to present six witnesses to pin the suspect. He changed his plea to guilty as prosecution was preparing to present the seventh witness.

 

In his judgment, Lt. Gen Gutti convicted the accused to 40 years for each count of murder, 40 for aggravated robbery and 20 for attempted murder.

He deducted six days from the sentence the suspect has spent on remand to 39 years and 359 days. The conviction stems from an attack by Lance Corporal Geoffrey Odaga, which caused the death of Ochen Richard Denis, Sunday Wokorach Ouma and Yasin Fred.  Jimmy Ojok escaped with injuries.

Court also ordered that the items he unlawfully robbed be returned to the relatives of the former proprietor of the Bar, Sunday Wokorach Ouma. The items include a mobile phone, a bag and Shillings 61,500. Relatives of the victims of the shooting reacted emotionally after the sentencing outside the court room.
