CRESTED CRANE CELEBRATING
The Uganda National Senior Women Football team, the Crested Cranes
on Tuesday eliminated Ethiopia in the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations Qualifiers
at the Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa.
The Crested Cranes needed shootouts after finishing the normal playtime with two
goals down. Two goals from Senafu Wakuma Denise and Captain Loza Abera had
already put the hosts ahead of Uganda.
The crested Cranes came into the return leg with a 2-0 advantage over
Ethiopians after defeating them last week in Kampala. Uganda only needed a draw
to sail past the Ethiopians in their bid to qualify for the continental championship.
However, Uganda conceded two goals in the opening half that levelled the tie. Despite
attempts to score an away goal, Uganda failed to score any. Uganda held on
until the final whistle and headed to the shootouts.
Midfielder Hasifa Nassuna and Fauzia Najjemba were Uganda’s saviours who netted
their penalties to see Uganda through. The hosts were the first to miss their
attempt before Hasifa Nassuna netted Uganda’s goal.
