The Uganda National Senior Women Football team, the Crested Cranes on Tuesday eliminated Ethiopia in the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations Qualifiers at the Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa.

The Crested Cranes needed shootouts after finishing the normal playtime with two goals down. Two goals from Senafu Wakuma Denise and Captain Loza Abera had already put the hosts ahead of Uganda.

The crested Cranes came into the return leg with a 2-0 advantage over Ethiopians after defeating them last week in Kampala. Uganda only needed a draw to sail past the Ethiopians in their bid to qualify for the continental championship.

However, Uganda conceded two goals in the opening half that levelled the tie. Despite attempts to score an away goal, Uganda failed to score any. Uganda held on until the final whistle and headed to the shootouts.

Midfielder Hasifa Nassuna and Fauzia Najjemba were Uganda’s saviours who netted their penalties to see Uganda through. The hosts were the first to miss their attempt before Hasifa Nassuna netted Uganda’s goal.

The Crested Cranes will now face neighbours Kenya in the final round of the qualifiers. Kenya also eliminated South Sudan with a 15-1 aggregate after their two legs.

The Winner between Uganda and Kenya on aggregate will qualify for the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations that will be held in Morocco next year in July. If Uganda qualifiers for AWCON, it will be their maiden appearance at the continental championship.
