Criminal Gang in Savannah Region Killed Six in Robberies-Police Report

According to the Annual Crime report released on Monday, members of the gang shot and killed six people and left six others injured. The gang committed 20 crimes, robbed 23 million shillings, and stole 243 mobile phones, one motorcycle and a pistol.

The criminal gang in the Savannah region killed six people and left others injured in robberies from 2020 to the end of January 2021. This is according to the annual crime report. 

The criminal gang killed more people in robberies than the other eight gangs in 2020. It operated in the areas of Matugga, Bombo, Kikyusa, Migeera, Wobulenzi, Luwero and Nakasongola district.

According to the Annual Crime report released on Monday, members of the gang shot and killed six people and left six others injured. The gang committed 20 crimes, robbed 23 million shillings, and stole 243 mobile phones, one motorcycle and a pistol.

The crimes from 2020 to the end of January 2021, the report has indicated.

Among those killed by the gang is Major Noel Mwesigye attached to Special Forces Command who was shot at Masinga village in Kikyusa sub-county in Luwero on 17th January 2021 and died later at Kikyusa Holly health centre where he was rushed by residents. The gang also robbed his pistol.

Others were Joseph Ziribasanga, a resident of Kitendere village, Kitendere Parish, Kamira Sub County in Luwero district who was shot in the stomach by three gunmen and died on 15th December 2020 at Mulago Hospital where he was referred.

The gang also killed Juma Rulwera aged 27 years a Boda Boda rider whom they found gambling with his colleagues at Namaliga Zone in Bombo town. Rulwera died on the spot.

The other three people were killed at Kimaga Trading Centre, Nabiswera Sub County in Nakasongola district when the gang armed with a riffle attacked and robbed an unspecified amount of money and motorcycle UBF 129R Bajaj. They shot Christine Nagawa and Sempijja Herbert killing them instantly while one Kato Yusuf died later in the hospital.

According to the report, the criminal gang was headed by Private Olega Mansoor alias Muko aged 35 years old, a Uganda Peoples Defense Force deserter and resident of Nkokonjeru Cell, Bombo Town Council in Luwero district.

“He was the gunman in all the above scenes and source of the gun. He recruited Kisule Stephen with whom they first met in Butuntumula Prisons in Luwero”, the report reads in part.

Other members of the gang were Rashid Yiga alias Mucholi aged 40 years a resident of Buvuma village, and Rogers Mwanje aged 24 yrs, Boda Boda rider and resident of  Buvuma village, all in Kakooge Sub County in Nakasongola district.

Samale Mawejje a  Boda Boda rider and resident of Busika village, Kalagala Sub County in Luwero and Robinah Nagazi, wife to Kisule Stephen resident of  Mabanda zone, Matugga in Wakiso district. She was the custodian of the gun.

Daniel Kyaterekera the Kamira sub-county councillor elect says that he narrowly survived being killed on 17th January this year when the gang attacked the home of parish Councillor George Sukka at Kanyogoga village where they found him leaving after a visit. 

Kyaterekera adds that the thugs had just killed Major Noel Mwesigye hours ago before they attacked them. Kyaterekera says that they assaulted him, fired bullets, robbed 450,000 Shillings and two mobile phones which they are yet to recover to date.

The report says that all the members of the gang have since been arrested, charged and remanded. They are facing charges of attempted murders, aggravated robberies and murders.  

Police have also recovered SMG rifle UG-UPDF 48003239 which they were using in the robberies, Pistol UG- UPDF with two magazines one loaded with 15 rounds and another with two rounds of ammunition.

The Savannah Regional Police Commander Susan Nalwoga Nalwoga said that the area is now peaceful after the suspects were arrested together with the gun they were using to kill the people.

Savannah Criminal syndicate is reported as the most notorious among the eight gangs listed in the 2020 crime report after it killed more people than others.

Other criminal gangs listed in the report are Kasese criminal syndicate, the Kampala Metropolitan motor vehicle theft syndicate, Wakodo criminal syndicate operating in Namutumba and Kyenga criminal syndicate, Arafat criminal syndicate operating in Rubaga and Makindye division among others.

Before they were all dismantled, they had killed ten people, injured eight, kidnapped and trafficked 15 people.

They also robbed 28 million shillings, stole 16motor vehicles and 253 mobile phones among other valuable property.
