Declare 1st March a Public Holiday -Bududa Residents

They have also asked government to put up a monument like a church at Nametsi where the public and grandchildren of those who perished in the disaster can go to remember them. They said most of those people who were buried there have no graves for their people to look at in remembrance for them.

Residents in Bududa district have asked government to declare 1st March of every year a public holiday. 

 

On 1st March 2010 over 200 people perished in Nametsi landslide and hundreds were displaced making it the first disaster of tat magnitude in Bugisu sub region. 

Today marked the 11th anniversary since the very people died in the great catastrophe. Over 500 people trekked to Nametsi landslide area for prayers and in commemoration of those who perished in the landslide. 

 

Residents like Wilson Swalikha ,Micheal Busiku, Herbert Wanambwa and many others asked government to consider Nametsi and also put up a monument like a church where the children of those who perished in the disaster can go remember them. 

  

They said most of those people who were buried there have no graves for their children to look at in remembrance of them.

Peter Kusolo the Bukalasi sub county local council three chairperson also supported the plea by his residents saying that would be the best way to remember those who perished.

George William Wopuwa the Bududa resident district commissioner pledged to push for the plea. He also urged those staying in those steep slopes to vacate now that rains are about to start.
