The delayed government
compensation of Lango war victims has irked the speaker of parliament, Jacob L. Oulanyah. The speaker, who
doubles as the NRM National Vice Chairperson for Northern
Region, expressed his disappointment while meeting members of the NRM League for Lango sub-region
at Gracious Palace Hotel in Lira City Wednesday.
In 2009, the Lango War Debt Claimant’s Association dragged the government to the High court demanding compensation for the livestock they lost during insurgencies in the

Oulanyah disclosed that he has petitioned the President despite the fact that he took the decision long ago to compensate the claimants. “I had a meeting with the president on this. He
asked me to write and I wrote and I checked that he had received the letter so
he will call a meeting. The Attorney General’s office is complicating this
thing but we’ll straighten it out,” he said.
Oulanyah wondered why year in, year out the matter of livestock
compensation has been a big issue in Northern Region. Linda Agnes Auma, the
Lira District Woman MP who has been at the forefront of the compensation battle in Lango equally expressed disappointment of the bureaucracies in the office of the Attorney

During the meeting, the members accused the party of using and abandoning them, especially after the past two elections. In a petition read by Daniel Okello, the NRM

District youth, and Women League Chairpersons among others attended the meeting. According to Oulanyah, the meeting was intended to re-energize NRM party structures, share experiences
and challenges on how to grow the party, and implement the NRM manifesto for 2021-2026.
