Authorities in Dokolo district have launched an operation against school absenteeism.
Under the theme “Children must be in school,”
the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Barbara Akech, on Monday launched the operation in Bata Town Council.
During the operation, several children were found at home doing
domestic chores instead of going to school.
Although most of the parents fled upon seeing the team, school-going children
were arrested. The operation is part of efforts to improve school attendance and overall academic performance in the district.
Both parents and the children were left at Dokolo Central
Police Station. Akech argued that the performance has deteriorated in the last couple of years.

Parents whose children were arrested will now pay a fine of
20,000 shillings per child. Akech rallied all leaders to get involved in ensuring that children go to school saying a
good performance is a collective responsibility.

Late last week, David Livingstone Okello, the Dokolo
district inspector of schools attributed the poor results to high levels of
absenteeism, late reporting to school and lack of parental support.
Amos Olal Odur, the former Makerere University Academic
Registrar argued that Education is the best gift a parent should strive to give
his or her child.

In the recently released Primary Leaving Examinations, Dokolo had only 6 pupils passing in first grade.
