A row has emerged between leaders of the Democratic Party-DP and the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC in Rakai district over split loyalty amongst their members.

The controversy stems from the ongoing candidate’ identification process in which some members of FDC are seeking endorsement from the People Power pressure group, which is coordinated by DP leaders in the area.

Ronald Ssekiwunga, the FDC chairperson for Rakai district accuses the DP leaders of deliberately misleading their members to pick People Power nomination forms hence dividing their loyalty between the two political movements. He says that the coordinators have a well-choreographed plan to weaken FDC structures, by stealthily recruiting their leaders into the pressure group.

Ssekiwunga explains that the DP-People Power coordinators are duping unsuspecting FDC aspirants to join a nonexistent political alliance between the two parties, and as a result, creating confusion.

Cue out…tulina abantu.”//

According to Ssekiwunga, the party’s District Executive Committee has summoned all sub-county leaders in Kyotera and Rakai districts to address the challenge.

Charles Ssekabira, the FDC mobilization secretary for Kyotera District has cautioned his DP counterparts against the plans, arguing that this may frustrate likely negotiations between the two opposition groups ahead of 2021 general elections and antagonise their chances of winning against the NRM.

Andrew Mugonza, the DP-People Power Youths Coordinator for Rakai and Kyotera districts has confirmed tapping members from FDC but says that the recruitment is not done out of coercion. He adds that whoever picked people power nomination papers have done it voluntarily after appreciating the values of the pressure group.
