Further inquiries are being undertaken to establish the role played by each of the suspects in the treason case against Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi and 33 others. This was stated this morning by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mike Chibita during a press conference held in Kampala.

Chibita says that according to the initial perusal of the file, there is evidence to pin those involved in the chaos that preceded the elections in Arua, but further inquiries were ongoing to establish who exactly pelted stones at the Presidential motorcade.

The statement follows a decision to charge Kyagulanyi with Treason; moments after the General Court Martial terminated the charge of illegal possession of firearms, which had been filed against him.  The termination of charges was based on advice by the DPP that charging Kyagulanyi separately, on a case that originates from the same facts tantamount to double jeopardy.

Chibita says his office runs a parallel operation with the General Court Martial but had cooperated to offer advice to ensure that the suspects are accorded justice.

He adds that the withdarawal of charges is also sometimes influenced by the lack of evidence and the loss of intrest in the case by complainants, but not neccesarily that the suspect did not commit the crime.
