Drivers, Operators Protest Sorry State of Mbarara City Park

Taxi and Bus operators in Mbarara City are protesting the sorry state of the park. The parks are filthy, dusty, and full of potholes..

Godfrey Mbaine, the Secretary of Finance Mbarara Taxi Union says since President Museveni stopped the tendering of Taxi/Bus Parks, the City Authority has not improved the park.

He says the money that is collected as a welfare fee is inadequate to maintain the park.

Nomuhangi Praise Bwire, a member of the City Development Forum wonders why the authorities have failed to upgrade the park which is in appalling conditions.

Amos Kataramire, a driver says that the tax park was constructed in 2000 to accommodate 200 vehicles but the numbers have increased causing congestion. He is worried that the situation will be worse when it rains and dust turns into mud.

Denis Mushabe, a taxi driver says he is forced to repair shock absorbers every two weeks because of the potholes that damage his vehicle.

Richard Mugisha, the Deputy Town Clerk of Mbarara City says that rehabilitation works of the park will start in the next quarter of this financial year.

But Merina Kekijusyo, the Mbarara City Engineer differed with the City Clerk noting that they will wait and follow the recently released circular by the Cabinet that directed users of the parks to start maintaining the parks before the works commence.
