The East African Community (EAC) has contacted the Government of Uganda on the possibility of reviving the East African Civil Aviation Academy in Soroti
In a speech made to the Global Aviation Safety Roadmap conference, the EAC Secretary General Juma Mwapachu the revival of the academy would address the shortage of qualified aviation personnel in the region. He said the EAC Civil Aviation Safety and Security Oversight Agency that is currently stationed in Arusha will be relocated to Entebbe later this year, where it will resume full operation.
Ambassador Mwapachu said the move would enable the region cope with the poaching of available aviation experts.
There is a critical shortage of pilots in East Africa mainly due to the massive exodus of aviation professionals in search of greener pastures outside Africa.
The Soroti Flying School in Uganda was established in the 1970s under the old East African Community that collapsed in 1977. The facility is rundown with vandalized lecture rooms and workshops and dilapidated buildings. It is Uganda's major pilot training school and was recently selected for development as one of the East African Community Centers of Excellence.
