The Council of Ministers of the East African Community has approved a 1,500-dollar salary increase for members of the East African Legislative Assembly.

According to a press statement issued after the meeting of the Council of Ministers, the salary for the legislative assembly members increases from 3,300 dollars to 4,800 dollars a month. This is just about 10 million shillings a month.

There are 126.6 million people in the five countries of the East African Community. The average GDP per capita in the region is 506 dollars or one million shillings per annum.

The Ministers also directed the East African Secretariat to develop a comprehensive proposal for the increase in per diem rates for the Executive Staff, Speaker, Judges, EALA Members and Professional and General Staff.

The salary and allowance increments were part of a series of adoptions approved in the new 2010/2011 budget for the East African Community.

The budget amounts to 59 million dollars. Half the money will be contributed by partner states and the rest by development partners and through miscellaneous income.
