The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has this afternoon given the Education Committee up to 10th December to present a report on their inquiry into the recent unrest and brutal attack on Makerere University Students by security personnel.
The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has given the Education
Committee two weeks to present a report on the recent unrest and attack on
Makerere University students by security personnel.
Parliament on 31st October directed the Education Committee to investigate the
unrest at Makerere University following a debate on the students strike and the
brutal raids by the army on students Halls of residence.
During the debate, MPs condemned the brutality by security
officers against Makerere University students who had been protesting the 15
percent cumulative tuition increment.
The Speaker then gave the committee two weeks to investigate the unrest at the
university, actions by the management and reports that some female students had
been sexually abused by security personnel.
On Wednesday, Kadaga granted the committee more time following a formal
request by the Vice-Chairperson John Twesigye Ntamuhiira who noted that after
holding several meeting, they realized that the matter had a wide scope and
that they had failed to trace students who had been reportedly sexually abused.
The Bunyaruguru MP, however, said that his committee had made some contacts in
regard to the matter and drawn up a final schedule for hearings. He appealed
for more time to allow them conclude the report by 5th December and report to
the House on 10th December.

the committee in order to secure more information and report back to parliament
on 10th December.
