A group of elders under the umbrella body Ogoko Elder’s Council have embarked on an ambitious plan to revamp the defunct Madi Indri cultural chieftaincy in Madi Okollo District.

The move according to the elders is meant to address the widespread moral degeneration among the Madi community, especially the young generation. They cite the rampant teenage pregnancies, early marriages, and incest among its subjects.

Madi Indri cultural chieftaincy collapsed in 1966 after the then-government of Dr. Apollo Milton Obote banned kingdoms and cultural institutions in the country.

Ben Afidra Amorimvapi, the Secretary of the Ogoko Elder’s Council says that their vision is reviving the cultural norms and values, and aspirations of the Madi which is facing threats from other cultures. He says so far they have begun consultations among the locals to revive the chieftaincy.

Elia Ariaka Longo, the Chairperson Ogoko Elder’s Council explains that once revived, the chiefdom will go a long way in addressing the current challenge of teenage pregnancies, especially among the youth.

Phillip Odriga, an elder in Madi Okollo District notes that the revival of the chieftaincy will spur unity among all seven sub-chiefdoms of the Madi indri for socioeconomic development.

According to Ronald Afidra, the Lower Madi County Member of Parliament, the revival of Madi Indri Chiefdom has been a long-time aspiration of the local people to preserve the legacy of the chief Ajai who helped the colonialist to extend their rule among the Madi community.

The cultural chieftaincy of the madi indri started with paramount chief Vudri who was followed by Chief Yawe, Chief Cwaki, Chief Leyi, and lastly Chief Ajai Leyi who ruled for 33 years until his death in 1952. Meanwhile, in 1952, the cultural chieftaincy was handed to Yonisani Toliva by Ajai and he ruled up to 1978.

Brief facts about the Madi Indri people indicate that they migrated from Egypt near the Mediterranean Sea land site in 900 AD.
