The Equal Opportunities Commission has registered more than 100 cases from the districts of Mbarara and Isingiro to be handled in the ongoing free legal clinic.

Hajjat Safiya Nalule Juuko, the Chairperson of the Commission says that the free legal clinic was an initiative to extend the services of the commission to the people in the countryside, who would otherwise find difficulty in registering complaints in the absence of regional offices.

She says that many of the cases before the commission relate to marginalization and discrimination, adding that the tribunal is already handling several of the cases, while others will be referred to Kampala for further action.

Habibu Sseruwagi, a commissioner representing the Youth says they have sent out a team of lawyers to different areas in the two districts to register cases from people.

He says the cases will be handled either through mediation, arbitration reconciliation of the parties, or the complainant and accused appear before the commission.

Agnes Nsimiimana, one of the complainants welcomed the initiative noting that she was sidelined by the chairperson of Kasikizi Village in Kakonkoma Sub County in Isingiro District when she wanted a letter to open a case against her father-in-law over land.

She says the letter was supposed to be attached on the case file and since then her case was never sanctioned by the DPP and that she failed to travel to Kampala to the commission to file a complaint.
