Police in Kiira region on Thursday confirmed the arrest of Akram Waiswa, over vandalizing part of the 220KV high voltage Bujjagali-Tororo-Kenya line.

Waiswa is reported to have vandalized the transmission power line in the areas of Kabembe village, within Kakira town council, in Jinja district.

He was arrested from his hideout in Mafubira ward, in Northern division of Jinja city, where he had hidden 19 pieces of angle bars suspected to have been vandalized from the towers of electricity transmission lines.

Prior to his arrest on Wednesday evening, Waiswa had just concluded a three year sentence over electricity transmission line vandalism charges, after being arrested and convicted under related circumstances in 2019.

Waiswa says that the angle bars are sold out to welders who use the same to mold metallic doors and windows respectively. “Each angle bar is sold largely to welders at 250,000 Shillings and they later reshape them to mold metallic doors, windows and other metallic items,” he says.

Waiswa further says that, they normally vandalize non- current carrier joints, which enusres they are safe from being electrocuted.

Meanwhile, the Kiira regional police spokesperson James Mubi, says that they also recovered a motorcycle with registration number; UEX 636F, which Waiswa and others still at large were using to transport the vandalized equipment.

Mubi notes that, the transmission line was vandalized in August, 2022, which prompted the eventual prosecution of one suspect at the Kampala based utility court, and Waiswa’s arrest is a sign of hope towards elimination of vandalism along the power transmission lines.

Mubi adds that, the electricity transmission line is located within the sugarcane plantation and they have boosted the number of security personnel manning the area, to avert any vandalism crimes.
