Hoima police are
detaining Derrick Oyergiu, 28, a resident of Kaiso landing site in Kabale
sub-county, for allegedly killing his six-month-old child. Oyergiu allegedly
had a dispute with his wife, Esther Tumaine on Friday last week for unknown
reasons.
During the
altercation, he took their six-month-old son and disappeared with him to an
undisclosed location. Following the incident, Tumaine reported the matter to
the police, prompting them to launch an investigation and search for the
suspect.
Oyergiu was
apprehended on Sunday. However, by the time of his arrest, he had already
killed the child and disposed of the body in a nearby bush. He later led
detectives to the scene where he had murdered and abandoned the baby. The lifeless body of
the child exhibited severe cuts on the neck, chest, and head. Police transported
the body to Hoima city mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Julius Hakiza,
the Albertine Region Police spokesperson, says the suspect is in custody at
Hoima central police station and will face charges in court accordingly.
