Father Arrested for Strangling Day-old Child to Death

The suspect has been identified as Alex Byamugisha, a resident of Katugo LC I village in Irindimura parish, Nalweyo sub-county in Kakumiro district.
Police in Kakumiro are holding a 42-year-old man on suspicion of strangling a one-day-old baby to death and burying his body secretly. The suspect has been identified as Alex Byamugisha, a resident of Katugo LCI in Irindimura parish, Nalweyo sub-county in Kakumiro district.

According to reports obtained by Uganda Radio Network, the suspect's wife, Allen Kemigisa, gave birth on Monday night. However, on Tuesday night, Byamugisha allegedly strangled the child to death and conducted a clandestine burial without the knowledge of residents.

Yoram Kwikiriza, the Katugo Village LC I Chairperson explained to URN in an interview that Byamugisha claimed his wife gave birth to a weak baby with health complications, and the child passed away after just one day. However, when asked about the child's whereabouts, Byamugisha provided inconsistent statements.

Suspicion grew among residents, leading to the suspect's arrest. He was subsequently taken to Kakumiro central police station. During police interrogations, he guided detectives to the location where he had secretly buried the child.

Priscilla Katushabe, a relative of the suspect, expressed shock at Byamugisha's actions, questioning why he would strangle his own child to death. Uganda Radio Network-URN was unable to obtain a comment from the child's mother at the time of reporting this story.

Morris Niyonzima, the Kakumiro District Police Commander-DPC, confirmed the arrest and detention of the suspect. He stated that investigations are ongoing and that police are considering exhuming the body to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the baby's death. Niyonzima added that once the investigations are complete, the suspect will be arraigned before the court to face charges of murder.
