Police in Rakai district are holding a father and son for murder. Sunday Kalibala and his son Tom Ssewanyana are the prime suspects in the death of a pit latrine digger identified as Andrew Mugumya.

The incident occurred in Kabano A Village, Kasasa Sub County, Rakai district.

Mugumya's partly charred body was found at his home by a friend who had gone to visit him on Thursday. It is thought Mugumya's attackers attempted to burn the 35-year old man's body after killing him.

Police sniffer dogs then led officers to Kalibala's home. He was immediately arrested along with his son.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that Mugumya had recently reported to village authorities that Kalibala had threatened his life.

Kalibala and Mugumya had been in conflict over the demarcation of their plots of land. Mugumya accused Kalibala of always encroaching on his land whenever he dug in his plantation.

Kasasa Sub County District Councilor Agnes Nasejje confirmed that they had received Mugumya's complaint about the land dispute. The authorities were yet to meet and discuss the matter before Mugumuya was murdered.

The Southern Region Police Spokesperson, Noah Sserunjoji, says that police investigations into Mugumya’s murder have kicked off.
