Sports Federations have resorted to seeking funding and sponsors to run their sporting activities. This is due to the low budget allocated to sports.

Last week Dr Bernard Ogwel, the Secretary-General of the National Council of Sports told sports federations that there will be no additional increase in the sports budget which they have been advocating for.

The NCS has been receiving 18 Billion Shillings to distribute among over 50 Sports Federations and of which 10 Billion Shillings is allocated to the Federation of Uganda Football Association, FUFA.

According to Ogwel, the NCS requires 197 Billion Shillings to fund all the sports federations.

Uganda Radio Network has learnt that the federations are seeking funding from betting companies like Betway Company, telecommunication companies including Airtel and MTN and also Alcohol companies that lie Nile breweries limited.

Hudson Ssegamwenge Vice President Administration Federation of Uganda Basketball Association, FUBA says that although they have been advocating for an increase in the budget, they have also looked for other sources to fund their activities because they do not only survive on government funds.

Several sports activities require immediate government funding, these include the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympic teams of players from different sports disciplines, the Silverbacks team that will be playing in the Afro Basket qualifiers, all these need government funding. Uganda has over 24 athletes who have already qualified for the Olympics these include athletes from Boxing and athletics.

FUBA also spent over 704 Million Shillings on trips to Egypt and Tunisia in the first and second qualifying windows of Afro Basket. The National Council of Sports (NCS) early this year gave FUBA 370 Million Shillings for a trip to Tunisia. However, the matches were not held played after five Ugandan players tested positive for COVID-19.

Now Ssegamwenge said as FUBA they will have no option other than engaging the National Council of Sports to fund the team to travel and have their qualifiers.
