Fire has destroyed property worth millions of shillings at Muntuyera High School in Ntungamo district.

The fire that started at around 9pm on Friday burnt the prefect’s hostel destroying all students’ belongings that had been kept there.

It took the intervention of the teachers currently camped at the school marking mock examinations and the neighbours to put the fire out using fire extinguishers and sand.

Sam Rwakajara, whose home is near the school, says they saw flames emerging from one of the hostels and immediately had to rush in with buckets of water and sand. Rwakajara says by the time police fire brigade arrived at the scene the locals and a few teachers had managed to put off the fire though students’ belongings were burnt.

Some of the bunt items include mattresses, suitcases, basins and books the students left behind in the prefect’s hostel before breaking off for second term holiday.

Yorokam Kamaringo, the school head teacher, told URN that they have started investigating why students decided to lock up their belongings in the prefect’s hostel and yet they usually take them home.

Kamaringo says the lost property is estimated to cost about 15 million shillings.

Francis Kabeera, the Ntungamo district police commander, says preliminary investigations have established that the students had tempered with the entire electricity wiring system in the Hostels.

The fire incident comes at the time when the school is recovering from the damages caused by students during a violent strike two months ago.

Muntuyera high school students in July 2013 staged a violent strike after disagreements between their leaders and the school administration over the quality of meals and poor sanitation.
