Fire has gutted several shops at Chanika border town in Kisoro district destroying merchandise worth millions of Shillings. The fire is said to have started from one of the makeshift structures at around 11am on Wednesday morning before spreading to several others.
The fire razed several shops leaving dozens of traders in tears. Robert Rugo Kazaire, one of the affected traders, says the fire destroyed his merchandise including several bags of maize flour, beans and boxes of soap.
According to Kazaire, they couldn't save their merchandise because the flame was huge. Denis Hakizimana, another trader says the inferno is a huge blow to his survival since his shop has been his only source of livelihood.
The Kisoro District Police Commander, Charles Okotto says that although the Police Fire and Rescue team responded in time, it couldn't do much. He however, says they didn't register any human causalities, adding that they have commenced investigations to ascertain the cause of the fire.
He warns residents against operating in makeshift structures so as to avoid similar occurrences in the future. In March 2013, fire gutted several makeshift shops in the same area and destroyed property worth millions of Shillings.
