Fire has gutted Kalaki weekly cattle market in Kaberamaido district reducing 300 grass thatched stalls and merchandise to ash. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon. Jane Alyoto, the LC3 chairperson Kalaki Sub County says one trader she only identified as Ocen was burnt while trying to rescue his merchandise. Ocen is currently admitted at Kalaki Health centre III with severe burns.
She says the fire also destroyed unspecified kilograms of meat as some cows had been slaughtered by the traders for sell. Alyoto says by the time they arrived at the market they couldn’t do much as the fire had consumed the market. She says they suspect the fire could have started from a piece of cigarette dropped by three men who were playing cards next to the market.
One of the men identified as Charles Amedu is being held to help police investigations into the cause of the fire. Alyoto appeals to government to construct permanent stalls in the market to prevent such incidents in the future. Ahmed Madiri, the Kaberamaido DPC says the fire spread to the market from the bush. Madiri says they are still investigating to establish the extent of the damage caused by the fire.
Raymond Etenu, the GISO Kalaki sub county says there are two theories to the cause of the fire. He says some of the people believe the market could have been burnt by a bush fire while other claim the fire was started by a man who believed that his girlfriend was making love with another in the bush and wanted to scare them.
