First West Lango Bishop Urges Spiritual Solution to Homosexuality Debate

Reverend Canon Alfred Acur Okodi, the first Bishop of West Lango Diocese has pledged a relentless fight against homosexuality.

Rev.Acur (57) was consecrated the first Bishop of the new diocese on Sunday at Aduku St Peters Church of Uganda during a ceremony that was attended by the President Yoweri Museveni.

He was appointed by the house of Bishops on July 17th 2014 at Lweza training and conference center as the first Bishop of West Lango Diocese.

The new diocese was carved from Lango Diocese during the 17th synod meeting held between June 11th and 13th 1997.

He was consecrated by the Archbishop of the Province of Church of Uganda Rev. Stanley Ntagali.

In his summons, Rev.Canon. Acur urged Ugandans to continue to resist advances by promoters of equal rights for homosexuals. He noted that the cancellation of the Anti-Homosexuality Act on August 1st 2014 only serves to clarify that the problem is beyond political solution and it's a spiritual problem that calls for a spiritual solution.

The new Bishop pledged to support the fight against the vice.

Acur also called upon Ugandans not to succumb to a lifestyle of drug and alcohol abuse because it shortens their life.

Rev. Acur described his appointment as a call to fulfil God's mission to serve his people.

Rev.Canon Alfred Acur Okodi was born on December 25, 1954 at Abako Sub-county in the present Alebtong District.

He holds a Master of Arts degree from the Nairobi Evangelical School of Theology that he attained in 1996 after obtaining a Bachelor of Divinity Degree from the then Bishop Tucker Theological College, now Uganda Christian University.

He also holds a teaching diploma from Kyambogo National Teachers' College, now Kyambogo University. 

He attended Dr. Obote College for O-Level before proceeding to Kitgum High School for his A-Level education. 

He taught in Lira Town College before he became a head teacher of Ibuje Secondary School and then Chaplain of Dr. Obote College. 

Since 2011 he has served as Vicar of St Stephens Nsambya as well as Archdeacon of Kampala Southern Archdeaconry in Kampala Diocese. The function attracted over 3,000 people. The new Diocese shall take charge of Kole Oyam, Apac and Amolatar district.
