Six people have been killed in a road accident along the Iganga-Tirinyi-Mbale highway.

Acoording to witnesses, a speeding commuter taxi registration number, UBE 687L burst it's tyre along Buyange village in Magada sub-county, Namutumba district, veered off the road and overturned several times.

According to Chakwita Abdul, the Chairperson Taxi Operators in Namutumba District,  the six passengers died on the spot while 11 survivors were rushed to Iganga General Hospital and Namutumba hospital.

Saleh Kumbuga, the Namutumba LCV Chairman, says that UNRA should construct raised humps in trading centres.

"We are fed up of this mess, let UNRA construct raised humps within the trading centres because they will technically force these speeding commuter vehicles and trucks to reduce speed while driving through trading centres," he says.

He adds that "traffic officers should also maintain their continued presence on the roads and ensure routine scrutiny of DMCs from our highways," he says.

On his part, James Mubi, the Busoga East Police Spokesperson says that investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of persistent accidents along the highways.

He further says that police has increased on both motorized and foot patrols in all black spots to curb accidents.

"We have beefed up our daily traffic operations with both motorized and foot patrols along the highway black spots of Nakalama, Waina, tirinyi, among others with an aim of curbing down accidents in the region," he says.
