The residents pursued the suspects and managed to apprehend Angobi, whom they severely beat, leaving him in a coma. He was rescued by police officers who rushed him to Masindi Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. Following the incident, police launched an investigation, leading to the arrest and detention of the five suspects.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrests to URN, adding that the search for more individuals involved in the mob action is ongoing. Hakiza condemned the actions of the residents, urging them to respect the law and refrain from taking matters into their own hands. He reminded the community that such acts of mob justice are illegal and punishable under the law.
In a related incident last month, four people were arrested in Masindi for alleged mob action. The suspects, also not identified due to ongoing investigations, were residents of Kirima Cell, Kisiita Ward, Karujubu Division, in Masindi Municipality.
In that case, the suspects, along with over 300 other residents, raided the home of William Katwesige, demolishing his house and setting it ablaze. They also destroyed his banana plantation and looted several items. The mob accused Katwesige of being involved in the murder of Linus Mugisa (24), a resident who had gone missing from the village on August 30.
Residents, along with police, searched for Mugisa, but he was not found until his body was discovered in Katwesige’s pit latrine. The recovery of the body led to an angry mob descending on Katwesige’s home, demolishing his house and setting it on fire.
