Floods resulting from heavy rains have cut off several roads in the new district of Rubanda.

The most affected roads include Bugongi-Bwindi-Butambi-Kyokyezo road, Kyenyi-Rutooga road in Nyamweru Sub County, Nshanjare-Ndeego-Rutenga road in Ikumba sub county, Muko-Nshanjare-Kaara road, and Karungu-Nyamasizi-Kabuarara road in Hamurwa Sub County.

Floods also cut off Kabale- Kisoro main road and Muko-Bufundi-Katuna road in Muko Sub County leaving transport paralysed.

Muzamil Rukundo, a taxi driver along Kabale-Kisoro road says that floods cut off the main road especially at Karukara and Hakagyezi in Hamurwa Sub County and in Nyaruhanga in Ikumba Sub County.

Rukundo says that, as a way of dodging the problem they have now resorted to using Kachwekano-Muko road but adds that it is also very risky, slippery and cannot favour drivers with long vehicles such as trailers.

Martin Owoyesigyire, a resident of Ikamiro in Muko Sub County, appeals for help from  Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to provide graders to open up blocked culverts along the Kabale-Kisoro road and along Muko-Katuna road, to allow easy flow of flood water coming from nearby hills.

The Rubanda District Chairperson, Kenneth Jogo Biryabarema, says that the district is working hard to make sure that blocked roads are opened soon. Biryabarema also says that his office has already informed UNRA officials about the problem for quick intervention.

Biryabarema says the floods also washed away several gardens of sorghum, beans, Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes and maize among others.  He however says that they have not registered any deaths or injuries as a result of the floods.

Engineer Augustine Kabanda, the UNRA Kabale branch Manager, says that they are planning to solve the problem within three days.

This is not the first time Rubanda district is affected by floods. In September 2017, floods hit the sub counties of Muko and Bufundi and claimed 17 lives. Over 50 houses were also ravaged while several roads were left impassible and gardens of crops washed away.
