Siraji Samanya Lyavala, the former Bugiri district LC V Chairperson is dead.

Lyavala breathed his last on Tuesday night at Norvik hospital in Kampala where he had been admitted for some time.

His friend, Hajji Abubaker Walubi, the Iganga District National Resistance Movement-NRM party chairperson, says Lyavala has of recent been in and out of hospital.

He told URN this morning that the deceased’s body was still lying in Norvik hospital mortuary.

Walubi said the Bugiri Woman Member of Parliament and NRM Secretary General, Justine Lumumba Kasule was at the hospital to take charge of funeral arrangements.

“Burial arrangements are on in the meantime. He may be buried most likely tomorrow in Bugiri,” he said. Asuman Kyafu, the former Iganga District LC V chairman, said Lyavala lobbied for the breakaway of Bugiri from Iganga in 1997.

“Little wonder that in October 2010, he managed to defeat Fisheries State Minister, Fred Mukisa in NRM primaries for Bukhooli MP Central seat. Even if he never won the seat, beating a minister at polls is no easy feat,” Kyafu said.   Lyavala was the pioneer LC V chairperson of Bugiri district, where he served until 2011. In a bid to restore cohesion in Busoga region, president, Yoweri Museveni appointed Lyavala a presidential adviser in-charge of Busoga affairs.

Kyafu recalled that in 2015 Lyavala bounced back as LC V Chairperson when the incumbent, Azala Marijan had problems with the law prompting a by-election.

He got nominated for the Bugiri municipality parliamentary seat as independent but stepped down from the race in favor of Asuman Basalirwa, the Justice Forum candidate.

“I am a member of the NRM party but urge my supporters to vote for Basalirwa. This will bring about development in Bugiri municipality,” Lyavala told his supporters.

He later joined the Kyadondo East legislator, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine and other opposition legislators to canvass votes for Basalirwa. His presence at Basalirwa’s final campaign rally at market square in Bugiri town excited voters.
