Former EALA Speaker Margaret Zziwa Wins Case Against Her Removal

Dr Margaret Nantongo Zziwas impeachment was endorsed by two-thirds of the elected members of the house over alleged abuse of office, intimidation of legislators and misbehavior.

Margaret Zziwa, the former East African  Legislative Assembly (EALA) speaker  has won a case in which she challenged her removal from office.

Dr Zziwa's impeachment in 2014, was endorsed by two-thirds of the elected members of the house over alleged abuse of office, intimidation of legislators and misbehavior.

Information obtained by URN indicates that the court sitting on Friday in Arusha city, Tanzania, ruled that that Zziwa was illegally removed from office and should be awarded 140,000 USD in costs (549m Uganda shillings) with legal costs of six percent of 200,000 USD (Uganda shillings 747m shillings).

The court in its ruling says all legislation passed in the absence of Zziwa as speaker is null and void.

EALA's first speaker, Zziwa's term in office was cut short just after three years. She was replaced by Dan Kidega.

The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA)is a sub-organ of the East African Community (EAC) which is the legislative arm of the Community. Members are sworn into five-year terms are elected from all the East African countries.
