Former MPs Kasamba, Akol Win NRM EALA Ticket

The National Resistance Movement-NRM party parliamentary caucus has elected six candidates to vie for the East African Legislative Assembly – EALA seats.

They are former Internal Affairs Minister, Rose Akol, former Agriculture State Minister, Mary Mugyenyi, former Kakuuto County MP Mathias Kasamba, former Lira RDC George Odongo, Paul Musamali, a staff attached to the Government Chief Whip's Office and Dennis Namara. 

The six emerged out of a contest of 37 candidates in the primary elections held on Wednesday evening at State House Entebbe.  Some of the candidates dropped out of the race before the polls.

According to the poll results, announced by the NRM party Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, Musamali polled the highest number of votes with 167 followed by Akol with 139 votes, Kasamba came third with 119 votes, followed by Odongo in fourth position with 119 votes, Mugyenyi came fifth with 115 votes and Namara 114 votes.

While declaring the winners, Odoi apologized to the candidates and legislator for the chaos that marred the polls on Tuesday and thanked them for enduring inconveniences. Justine Kasule Lumumba, the NRM Secretary General also defended the Commission, saying it was undertaking the EALA primary elections for the first time.

Lumumba asked each of the six candidates to collect signatures from at least 20 legislators backing their nomination before her office submits their names to parliament on Thursday. She appealed to NRM legislators to support their candidates.
