Fort Portal City Council is seeking 100 million Shillings to complete a section of the council chambers.

Speaking during the State of the City address on Tuesday, the City Mayor Asaba Edison Ruyonga revealed that following the elevation to city status, they are facing challenges of office space.

Asaba says that the number of staff has increased leaving them without any working space.

Asaba asked the city council to approve at least 100 million shillings to enable the completion of the ground floor of the chambers.

Prosper Businge, the Fort Portal City Secretary for Finance, Planning, and Administration said the city council had turned to the central government for support. .

Businge however believes the city council is in a position to provide the 100 million shillings to operationalize the city structure to provide enough working space this financial year.

In 2010 Fort Portal Municipality then, awarded a 3.5 billion contract to DECON International Construction Limited to establish council chambers, however due to slow progress the contract was suspended and later awarded to KHLISA Construction Company, The Municipal Council had set 2015 as the date for completion of the chambers but in vain.

At least 1 billion Shillings has so far been spent on the structure according to David Kyasanku the City Town Clerk.
