The Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement – NRM Youth League in Kabarole district, Gilbert Kayondo has protested the results from Central Division mayoral race. Kayondo, who is also the former speaker of Fort Portal Municipality, says that the primaries which were held on Monday were characterized by vote-rigging, voter bribery and interference by security personnel.

Kayondo was competing against Richard Muhumuza, the former Fort Portal Municipality West Division Chairperson and Gombolola Internal Security Officer – GISO. Kayondo garnered 5,830 votes while Muhumuza got 7,903 votes.

According to Kayondo, there was vote rigging from polling stations like Kitembe, Kabundaire and Lorry Park. For instance, he argues that during the Fort Portal City Central Division Member of Parliament elections, the total votes cast during the MP primaries at Kitembe polling station were 174.

He wonders how his rival would get 500 votes from the same polling station, adding that the same happened at different polling stations.

Kayondo joins other losers in Fort Portal who have vowed to contest as independent candidates in next year’s elections. The others are Judith Mukidi Basemera, who lost to Linda Irene Mugisa in the Fort Portal City Woman Member of Parliament race and Solomon Ruhundwa who lost to his rival Margaret Muhanga for the Fort Portal city North Division.

Muhanga emerged winner with 6,061 votes against Ruhundwa’s 5,793 votes. He argued that there were electoral malpractices in the race.

About two weeks ago, the Kabarole and Fort Portal NRM Chairman John Kusemererwa pleaded with party members who lost in the primaries not to contest as independents to ensure harmony in the party.
