The suspects are alleged to have convinced the deceased's parents that they were taking their crippled child for ritual cleansing, only to return on Saturday without him. They claimed that he was left at a traditional healer.
Police in Bugiri district has arrested four family members on
allegations of murdering a four-year-old boy, Aksam Okalo.
The suspects who are being detained at Bugiri central police station include
the deceased's grandfather, Hassan Mugenyi, and uncles, Adam Kawanguzi, Juma
Igaga, and Hassan Mukama.
The suspects are alleged to have convinced the deceased's parents that they
were taking their crippled child for ritual cleansing, only to return on Saturday
without him. They claimed that he had been left with was left at a traditional healer.
However, the curious parents led by residents mounted search for the missing
child and recovered his body in a shrine.
Okalo's body which was missing a tongue and private parts was found abandoned
in a shrine located in Matovu C village, Nankoma Sub County.
Okalo's body was taken to Bugiri general hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
The deceased's father, Adam Wanyama told journalists that, his
father accused him of giving birth to a cursed child and was always wanted the
child to be given away for ritual cleansing.
"My father made life hard for me and my wife as he accused us
of giving birth to cursed child who urgently needed ritual cleansing, but both
of us are Muslims and it was not okay for us to dedicate our innocent child to
the spirits. But on Saturday as I was away my brothers and father stole the
child from my wife and ran off with him, “he says.
James Mubi, the Busoga East police spokesperson says that
traditional leaders have failed to sensitize their members on the dangers and
legal implications of engaging themselves in child sacrifice.
This is the second case of child sacrifice reported from Nankoma Sub
County in a period of two months.
