Four Arrested in Fort Portal for Alleged Kidnaps, Robbery

The arrested are suspected to have been working with Amos Mugume – one of the most wanted suspected kidnappers and hardcore criminals in Fort Portal city and surrounding areas who was shot dead on Friday.

Police in Fort Portal is having in the custody of four people suspected to have been involved in kidnaps, robbery and other crimes.

The suspects are believed to have been working with Amos Mugume, an alleged kidnapper who was shot dead on Friday by security personnel in Karamaga cell in Central Division, Fort Portal City.    

Those arrested are Muhammad Abdul, Mariam Abdul, Raymond Aliganyira and valley Kemigisa.   

According to the Rwenzori West regional police spokesperson, Vincent Twesige, after Mugume’s death, they were able to get his accomplices. For instance, he said that Miriam and Muhammad were helping Mugume with all the information he wanted from the public.

For Kemigisa, she allegedly involved herself in getting Mugume a new Simcard that he would use to contact families of his victims for ransoms.

Last month, Mugume attempted to rape a student of Kyebambe Girls’ Senior Secondary School in Fort Portal. The incident happened at around 10 pm when the S.5 student had gone to the toilet.  

In 2018, police arrested Mugume and six others for allegedly kidnapping Emmanuelle Lisha Ahumuza, a one and half-year-old girl from her parents’ home in Maguru, Central Division Fort Portal Tourism City.  

Ahumuza was reunited with her family after the parents reportedly paid a ransom of 2.5 Million Shillings.   However, in October last year, Mugume escaped from Katojo prison in Fort Portal where he was on remand.  

The Prisons Spokesperson, Frank Baine, said that Mugume had taken advantage of a heavy downpour that day to escape.
