Kanungu police are holding four suspected gunmen for murder and aggravated robbery. The suspects include Julius Muhwezi and Fred Orishaba, both residents of Kanungu district. The others are Hillary Namanya and Kenneth Tumushabe, residents of Mitooma and Rukungiri Districts, respectively.
The four are wanted for shooting and robbing Amon Tirwomwe alias Kadogo, a taxi driver at Ncwera Bridge along Ishasha- Katunguru road at around 6:30am on Wednesday morning. The suspects waylaid Tirwomwe who was driving an Ipsum vehicle registration number UAY 679P with two passengers from Kihihi to Kasese district and shot him on the forehead.
After their mission, the gunmen fled into Queen Elizabeth National Park with their victim's belonging including unspecified amount of money bags and mobile phones. Tirwomwe was rescued by another taxi driver who found him bleeding and rushed him to King David Clinic in Kihiihi Town, where he was referred to Bwindi community hospital in Kanungu.
Tiromwe was moved to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital on Wednesday night for an operation to remove the bullet lodged in his head. Doctors at Mbarara Regional Referral hospital pronounced him dead this morning. Ely Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, police and the army tracked down the suspects and apprehended them in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Maate says they recovered a Sub Machine Gun number 5617136528 with seventy nine rounds of ammunition. He also says they recovered the body of Gideon Byaruhanga who was abducted by the suspects on his way to Kasese district.
The suspects are in custody at Rukungiri police station for interrogations as security combs the park for most suspects. The shooting on Wednesday, came a week after unidentified people kidnapped Yowanasani Kyarisiima, a rice dealer from his home in Kabingo cell, Kanyantorogo Sub County in Kanungu district.
The abductors dragged their victim into the Democratic Republic of Congo and are pushing his family for a ransom of Shillings 25 million before they can release him.
