Godfrey Lutalo, the LC 3 Chairperson of Nakitoma sub county says that the three women were injured by falling bricks when a heavy storm hit Bujaabe Pentecostal church where they were praying forcing the wall to collapse at around 4 pm on Tuesday evening.
At least four people have been injured following a heavy storm
that left a trail of destruction in Nakitoma sub-county in Nakasongola district on Monday evening.
The injured are Judith Kobusingye,
Winnie Kamwine, Justine Lwamunyagule, and Edirisa, all residents of Bujaabe village. Godfrey Lutalo, the LC
3 Chairperson of Nakitoma sub county says that the three women were injured by falling bricks when a heavy storm hit Bujaabe Pentecostal
church where they were praying forcing the wall to collapse at around 4 pm on Tuesday evening.
He also says that Edirisa was also injured when his house collapsed due
to the storm. Lutalo says the victims
sought treatment at Nakitoma health center III and were discharged on Tuesday
night. He says that over 10
houses collapsed whereas several rooftops were also blown off due to the heavy
storm.
Some of the affected residents are Chris John Kitakule, Lilian Kutuusa, Harriet Namuyiga, Alex
Balyekyusa, and Rodgers Katege, all residents of Bujaabe and Kafu
villages. Some of the homeless residents
spent the night in the cold whereas local leaders and neighbors hosted others. The storm also destroyed
crops for over 200 households plunging them into food insecurity.
The affected crops include cassava, maize, and bananas. James Butagasa, a resident of
Kafu village, says that he lost over 10 acres of maize in the storm. He has appealed
for seedlings from the Ministries of Agriculture as well as Disaster Preparedness
to enable them to replant their gardens and save them from future food insecurity. Sam
Kigula, the LC 5 Chairperson of Nakasongola, says that he has recieved reports about the destruction but the district is financially constrained to respond.
Kigula explained that the district budgeted for only five million Shillings in the financial year 2022/23 for disaster assessments. ''So the disaster management committee will visit the affected residents and we submit requests to the Office of the Prime to help them," Kigula said. Recently, the Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees,
Hillary Onek said that the Office of the Prime Minister is planning to
establish 5 regional disaster management centers. However, nothing is on the ground. Disaster victims always wait for a response from the Office of the Prime Minister.
