The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations, FUBA has finally secured funding for the National Basketball team, Silverbacks ahead of the continental championship, Afrobasket finals

The National Council of Sports (NCS) through the Secretary General, Bernard Ogwel today handed over 340 million shillings to the President of FUBA, Naser Sserunjoji to help the team in the, Afrobasket finals slated between August 24th to 5th September 2021 in Kigali, Rwanda.

The local basketball governing body had spent over a month lobbying for facilitation for men’s national basketball team that is set to participate in the event. The team was on verge of missing out in the competition due to lack of funds.

While handing over the money, Ogwel applauded the leadership of the Basketball fraternity for the efforts they have put in to secure qualification of the team

“I thank the leadership of FUBA for having done everything possible to see that our National basketball team qualifies amidst all the struggles. As Government, we have been part of this journey since the first window in November last year," said Ogwel.

He said the the money will be divided to cater for preparations for the last remaining days and the remaining portion will support the team in the final games. The team is expected to fly out to Rwanda tomorrow.

Sserunjoji thanked the government for the timely intervention.“We want to thank the government for this timely intervention because the team was about to miss out on participation. This is a good gesture and I could not have imagined missing out," said Sserunjoji.

The team’s coach Mande Juruni told Uganda Radio Network (URN) that the team is ready despite missing out on the buildup games they had organized to play with Egypt.

Cue out: … are just waiting.”//

FUBA however remains with a burden of paying a loan they acquired to facilitate the team's qualification away to Morocco in June. During the qualifying game, the team was financially crippled when the National Council of Sports revealed that they did not have funds. Consequently, FUBA was forced to acquire a loan of US$100,000  to facilitate the team’s participation in the qualifiers. However, Ogwel also said that the council will also try to find a solution about the loan.

Earlier last month, the senior men’s national basketball team visited the parliament of Uganda to lobby for funding. On this visit the Parliament directed that over 100,000 US Dollars (350 million shillings) borrowed by the Federation of the Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) to send players to the qualifiers should be reimbursed.
