Internal Affairs Minister Gen. Aronda Nyakairima has rejected a request by Gulu District officials to create and operationalize four Police stations there.

This morning, Gen. Aronda Nyakairima visited Gulu district to launch the official distribution of the National Identity cards.

However, before the launch Ojara Martin Mapenduzi, the Gulu LC V Chairperson asked the minister to set up four Police Stations in the district. He said setting up a Police Station at least in each of the Divisions would help step the rampant crime in the district.

He said criminals take advantage of the absence of Police near them to commit heinous crimes in urban centers, something that can be reversed with the establishment of ne Police Stations. Ojara told the Minister that the district has planned to relocate the Central Police station from its current location near Gulu Main Hospital to pave way for the expansion of the health facility.

This he said would be achieved by decentralizing Police services in all divisions in the municipality as it races towards becoming a city. However, in his response General Nyakairima said with increased community policing, there is no need to establish Police presence in all administrative units in the Municipality.

He asked the district to streamline its physical development plan to accommodate the hospital expansion.
