Parliament has given government one month to produce a report on the illegal evictions across the country.

The directive came as Parliament passed a motion by Wakiso Woman MP, Rosemary Sseninde, for a resolution of Parliament to urge government to inquire into the recurring illegal land evictions in the country.

Sseninde, in her motion debated this afternoon, noted that there is an unprecedented rise in allocation of what was formerly public land to foreign and local investors by the Uganda Land Commission and district land boards without due consideration of the sitting tenants.

The legislators rejected calls by government to have a select committee in Parliament to have an inquiry in the matter, with Sseninde citing the busy schedule of MPs in handling parliamentary work.

Last week, the Minister for Lands, Daudi Migereko told the House that Cabinet has set up a subcommittee, chaired by Adolf Mwesigye to probe the surge in land wrangles and evictions in the country.

The House has also directed the Ministry of Internal Affairs to produce a report on investigations into the conduct of police officers during evictions.

Bungokho South MP, Michael Werikhe notes that the involvement of the police in most of the land evictions has caused more harm than good.

Parliament also directed that the Judiciary allocates more resources towards expeditious handling of land-related cases. The Minister for Lands, Daudi Migereko says this will go a long way in tackling land wrangles before they run out of hand.
