Government Ignoring LGBTs– Museveni

In 2013, parliament passed the anti-homosexuality act that the president signed into law on February 24th, 2014. However, the Constitutional court annulled the act on August 1st 2014 on grounds that Parliament faulted procedures in enacting it.

Government is ignoring the Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual and Transgender community despite the current legislation that criminalises anybody involved in the practice, according to President, Yoweri Museveni has said.

He was speaking during the swearing in of the incoming Principal Judge, Flavian Nzeija and the three Supreme Court Justices including Mike Chibita, Ezekiel Muhanguzi and Night Percy Tuhaise at State House- Entebbe on Tuesday afternoon.

Currently, homosexuality is criminalised under sections 145 - 147 of the penal code act. Museveni noted with concern the disconnect in Ugandan laws, saying there is need to harmonise the laws to suit the interests of Ugandans.

Speaking at the same event, the Chief Justice, Bart Katureebe reminded the new appointees that their duties are spelt out in the constitution as assisting the Chief Justice in the administering justice to the people of Uganda.

The elevation of Justice Percy Night Tuhaise and Ezekiel Muhanguzi has left gaps in the Court of Appeal. Solomon Muyita, the Judiciary Spokesperson says three more justices of are needed to fill the panel of the appellant court.
