Government through the Office of the Prime Minister-OPM is to supply relief food and planting material to the worst famine hit districts in Teso and Karamoja sub-regions.

Musa Ecweru, the Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Minister, told URN this morning that they are carrying out a quick assessment to verify the number of the famine affected persons in both regions.

He said government will respond accordingly after the assessment to establish the number of families that need relief food and planting material to avoid the famine situation getting out of hand.

Ecweru listed some of the worst affected districts as Amuria, Katakwi, Bukedea and Ngora.

//Cue in…Uganda has food….

Cue out….that come…//

He said they halted their earlier plans to distribute relief food for fear of being seen to be campaigning for the ruling National Resistance Movement party.

Ecweru says he has learnt that some families in Teso sleep on empty families while those from Karamoja have moved to the neighboring Acholi, Teso and Kenya in search of food assistance.

He says the famine has affected school attendances as many pupils have dropped out of school. 43-year-old, Susan Nakiru told URN that he fled Napak district to Teso because of hunger.

She currently does casual work to buy dry cassava, which sends back home to support her family. Nakiru has 8 family members who have remained in Karamoja and look up to her for support.
