The Ministry of Agriculture plans to train District Agricultural Officers as the deadly Desert Locusts continue to invade different parts of the country.

The trainings, according the Commissioner for Crop protection, Steven Tibeijuka will equip the officers on how to manage desert locusts in 17 districts in the Karamoja belt.

According to Tibejuka, the first meeting will take place in Moroto district on Wednesday, which has been designated as one of the operation centres in the fight against the locusts

Tibejuka says that the training will be jointly conducted by ministry of agriculture Food and Agricultural Organization, (FAO).

// Cue in; Already we have made

Cue out…As the honourable ministers will decide.”//

Tibejuka said the training is crucial, because district agricultural officers in the affected districts need knowledge about the desert locusts, so as to transfer this knowledge to members of the community in locust prone districts.

He also says that government has procured 200 motorized pumps, 300knapsack sprays pumps, and 200 sets of protective gear. He adds that 10,000 litres of ground spraying pesticides are being assembled for airlifting to Moroto to embark on ground spraying.

Martin Ameu the focal person for Desert locust response for Uganda said that the experts led by Doctor Antonio Querido, are in Karamoja on a fact-finding mission to help the ministry of agriculture understand what is on ground.

“He is on a fact-finding mission to understand what is on ground and coordinate with government to understand what can be undertaken to fight the locusts.” Ameu said.
