Martin
Kafanta Atukwase, the incumbent Guild President of Great Lakes Regional
University in Kanungu district has been relieved of his duties.
In a suspension letter dated April 30th 2019, the University Vice-Chancellor,
Dr Stanley Katungwensi says that the suspension is in the
interest of the University Security.
Katungwensi
says that Kafanta influenced guild council elections and forced students to
vote, Cephas Agaba instead of his contender Frank Turyagyenda.
According
to Katungwensi, Kafanta’s influence created disunity among students.
On
Tuesday the university administration was forced to suspend the elections until
further notice after a section of students held a protest against Kafanta’s influence.
Students’ protest also forced the administration to halt the guild open-air
campaigns that were to be held on Tuesday.
The
University Dean of Students, Rev Mamerito Nturanabo says that they resolved to
suspend Kanfanta in order to create sanity among students. Nturanabo says
that they resolved to also suspend elections after realizing that Kafanta’s
influence is likely to cause irregularities like vote rigging.
One of the students who preferred anonymity says that they don’t
want Kafanta’s influence of forcing them to vote Agaba on claims that he supports
National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
However, in his defence, Kafanta accuses Katungwensi and Rev Nturanabo
for resolving to suspend him without being given a fair hearing.
Kafanta adds that the suspension is illegal adding that he is consulting
his lawyers to seek legal redress.
