Grounded Ambulance Piles Woes for Sembabule Health Centre IV

Sembabule had only one double cabin pick-up used as an ambulance. However, the latest development implies that the health centre is left without any transport means for patients. Residents told Uganda Radio network that they have to hire private cars or motor cycles to transport patients to Masaka Hospital in case of referrals.

The only ambulance owned by Sembabule Health Centre IV is grounded over lack of funds for repair, piling woes for the cash strapped facility.

Sembabule had only one double cabin pick-up used as an ambulance. However, the latest development implies that the health centre is left without any transport means for patients. Residents told Uganda Radio network that they have to hire private cars or motor cycles to transport patients to Masaka Hospital in case of referrals.

Dr. Herbert Tumusiime, the In-Charge of Sembabule Health Centre IV says the ambulance broke down last year after struggling to keep it operational with personal resources. He however adds that it is now beyond repair.

URN has learnt that government allocates Ugx 6 Million to Sembabule health centre IV every quarter. The money is arguably not enough to meet the continuous needs of a health facility and maintain service delivery. As a result, some planned outreach programmes have been suspended due to lack of funding and lack of transport.

Cue out: …money immunization outreaches.”//

Dr. Elly Muhumuza, the Sembabule LC5 Chairman explains that they expect to repair the grounded ambulance next financial year because currently the district has no funds.

Muhumuza however says he has instructed Sembabule district Health Department to surrender one of its two vehicles to be used at the health centre.

The grounding of ambulance is just one of the numerous challenges Sembabule Health Centre IV is grappling with. Others are; the lack of an operational theatre, the absence of a resident anesthesiologist and shortage of other health workers. The health centre also grapples with lack of blood transfusion services.
