Police in Rakai district are holding a private security guard for shooting a colleague in Kyotera town.

The shooting incident occurred on Thursday night, 7pm, at a Simba Telecom shop in Kyotera. It involved two guards who work for Security Plus. The guards were supposed to be on duty at the shop.

Francis Tumwesigye, the District Police Commander, has confirmed the incident and the arrest of Joseph Karugahare (18), who shot his coworker Jonah Oyesigire.

It is not clear what caused the shooting incident. However, eye witnesses say that before the shooting the two guards quarrelled.

Oyesigire is said to have reprimanded Karugahare for leaving their duty station to engage in a game of Ludo.

Eye witnesses say that after Oyesigire fired in the air to scare away an angry Karugahare, Karugahare responded by shooting at Oyesigire.

Police did not reveal the extent of the damage the bullet aimed at Oyesigire\'s neck could have caused. Police found an unconscious Oyesigire bleeding profusely from the neck. Oyesigire was rushed to Kalisizo hospital where he is admitted. He has not yet recovered consciousness.

Karugahare is detained at Kyotera police station where he is being interrogated. An SD Reference No. 34/05/03/015 has been entered and police is processing a CRB for of the case as investigations continue.

Tumwesigye says the two guns are in police custody. Oyesigire will be charged with attempted murder and produced in court after investigations are completed.

Taban Chiriga, the District CIID, says police is eager to get to the root of their quarrel. Chiriga says such shootings usually break out after disagreements over money, insults, soured relationships or interception of a robbery scheme.

Karugahare, meanwhile, says he did not intend to kill Oyesigire. He claims he shot at him in self defence after Oyesigire fired the first shot.

Uganda Radio Network has learnt from Tumwebaze that the District Security Committee is planning to meet all proprietors of private security groups to chart a way forward on how to improve their security services.

He says that they will screen all personnel of these groups to assess their skills level. are yet to scrutinise all the six private security groups that are operating in the district to avoid using unqualified people who may become a menace to the public.

There are six private security groups operating in Rakai. They are Uganda New Securico, Damaco, Security Plus and others.
